Washington GT Magnet Elementary School

Academically Gifted Program

At Washington, all students identified as Academically Gifted (AG) receive differentiated instruction in their regular classroom. Their AG service is also provided through AG electives, which are offered every quarter. This is standard school policy across the district in GT Magnet schools. Students (strong and very strong identification) are required in the district to take at least one elective per identified area during the year in order to legally meet service requirements for the year. This means a child who is identified in both reading and math are only required to take two AG electives (1 in reading and 1 in math) sometime during the school year to meet their AG service requirement.

At Washington, we ask that all Academically Gifted students (moderate, strong and very strong) consider taking more than their required service allotment while maintaining an educationally balanced schedule. Academically Gifted electives are offered in reading, math, science and social studies.

All other electives are required to offer differentiated instruction as well so that all children are given opportunities to reach their potential. Therefore, if an AG student does take an elective that is not labeled as AG, they will still participate in activities to extend their learning beyond the expected curriculum.
